IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designations now available in Washington

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) has expanded its Wildfire Prepared Home program to include Washington—bringing nationally recognized, science-based wildfire mitigation standards to our region.

At NW Roots, this directly reinforces the work we’re already doing through our Firewise Program.

Wildfire risk in Central and Eastern Washington is not theoretical—it’s ongoing. Research shows that the majority of homes ignite from wind-driven embers, not direct flames. That’s why our approach focuses on targeted retrofitting and construction strategies that address the three primary threats: embers, radiant heat, and direct flame exposure.

The IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home program outlines many of the same principles we implement every day, including:

  • Hardening vulnerable areas like vents, decks, and eaves

  • Reducing combustible materials around structures

  • Integrating systems that actively defend the home during wildfire events

IBHS offers two levels of designation:

  • Wildfire Prepared Home – focused on protecting against ember intrusion

  • Wildfire Prepared Home Plus – enhanced protection against radiant heat and direct flame

There is also a Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood designation, recognizing that wildfire resilience is not just about one home—it’s about how entire communities work together to reduce structure-to-structure fire spread.

That same philosophy is at the core of our Firewise Program. We combine ember-resistant retrofits, non-combustible material upgrades, and wildfire sprinkler systems with practical, property-specific solutions designed for real conditions across Kittitas County and surrounding areas.

As these standards gain traction in Washington, they reinforce what we’ve long believed: wildfire resilience comes from proactive planning, smart construction, and ongoing maintenance—not last-minute reaction.

If you’re looking to better protect your home or align with emerging wildfire standards like IBHS, we’re here to help. Reach out to NW Roots to schedule a Firewise assessment and learn what steps make sense for your property. https://www.nwrootsconstruction.com/firewise
